The reliable way to do that in three paragraphs is to describe one decision that changed because of your analysis — not the dashboard you built, but what someone did differently after seeing it. That's the difference a cover letter can show that a resume line can't.

The hook. Name the role and one concrete reason you're a fit — not enthusiasm on its own.

Phrases worth echoing from the job post
Use the ones that are genuinely true of you — echoing the posting's own language helps both a human reader and an ATS scan.

Mistakes that sink data analyst cover letters
- Listing tools instead of decisions. Everyone applying has SQL and Tableau on their resume; the letter should say what you did with them.
- Describing a dashboard's features rather than who used it and what changed. A dashboard nobody acted on is not an achievement.
- Skipping the business domain. Retention analysis in retail and in fintech are different jobs — say which one you've actually done.
- Writing the letter as a summary of the resume rather than the one story the resume didn't have room for.
