The letters that read as senior name a decision that could have gone the other way, and explain what made it go the way it did. The ones that read as junior list features shipped, which is indistinguishable from being along for the ride.
Opening paragraph example
The hook. Name the role and one concrete reason you're a fit — not enthusiasm on its own.
I'm writing to apply for the Product Manager role at Finlume. Owning a billing product for the last three years has taught me exactly the kind of prioritisation your posting describes needing for the payments roadmap.

Written the way this role is actually screened. Swap the details for yours — keep the shape.

Use the ones that are genuinely true of you — echoing the posting's own language helps both a human reader and an ATS scan.

Mistakes that sink product manager cover letters
- Listing shipped features without saying which of them were your call versus engineering's or design's.
- Writing in the passive voice — "the onboarding flow was redesigned" — which erases the decision the letter exists to show.
- Describing the product you want to work on rather than the judgment you'd bring to it. Enthusiasm for the domain is not a qualification on its own.
- Omitting the thing you killed or said no to. A PM letter with only wins in it reads as unfiltered, not as strong.
